With the conclusion of the 2023 NBA Draft, the Summer League is the next basketball action before the start of the 2023-24 season. Showcasing the future and opportunity of the league. The highly anticipated rookies Victor Wembanyama, Brandon Miller, and Scoot Henderson, will all be featured in the 76-game schedule.
Three separate tournaments throughout the month of July will air on NBA TV and ESPN’s networks: The California Classic in Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center (July 3rd and 5th), The Salt Lake City League in the Delta Center (July 3rd, 5th, and 6th), and the traditional NBA 2K Summer League in Las Vegas.
In the 5th Annual California Classic, the top two lottery teams in the Spurs and Hornets will headline the 6 teams participating. San Antonio, Charlotte, Sacramento, Golden State, the LA Lakers, and Miami.
The Jazz, Grizzlies, Thunder, and 76ers will all take part in the 8th consecutive Salt Lake City Summer League. Utah’s three-first round picks, Taylor Hendricks, Keyonte George, and Brice Sensabaugh will all get their first shot on the big stage, while Thunder GM Sam Presti is hopeful for Chet Holmgren’s return to the hardwood. The Grizzlies and 76ers will join them in the three-day tournament.
For the 18th Summer League in Las Vegas, all 30 rosters will play at least five games each. After each team plays 4 games, the top 4 in winning percentage will participate in the semifinals on July 16th while the two winning teams compete for the championship the next day.
Although No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama won’t travel with San Antonio for the California Classic, he is set to lead them against Brandon Miller of the Hornets on the first day of NBA 2K Summer League action. No. 3 overall pick Scoot Henderson and the Trail Blazers will suit up to play against No. 4 overall selection Amen Thompson and the Houston Rockets at 7 pm ET.
The 2023 Summer League will have at least 6 games on each of the first 10 days of action and on Sunday, July 9th, Amen Thompson will be set to compete against his twin brother, Ausar, at 6 pm ET on ESPN 2. Then you can expect an exciting matchup with the Spurs facing the Blazers later in the day at 8 pm ET.
In last year’s games, Brandon Williams and MVP Trendon Watford helped crown Portland as the 2022 Summer League Champions. They defeated the New York Knicks 85-77 in the championship game. This year their roster will be headlined by rookie Scoot Henderson, and Shaedon Sharpe, whose production elevated when the Blazers playoff chances dwindled.
