The Legendary Spending Habits of Gilbert Arenas
It’s no surprise that Gilbert Arenas made a ton of money during his NBA career. Agent 0 earned over $160 million from his 12-years in the league. However, he was just as talented at spending his millions as he was at making them.
At one point, he had a functional shark tank in his mansion that cost him almost $80,000 a year – that’s just about $7,000 a month on what he called “Shark Maintenance.” The only reason we know this is because following one of his games, he was given child support documents and his spending habits became public record.
At the peak of his career, he was making about $1.5 million a month, but was spending obscene amounts of cash to deplete it. Don’t get me wrong, I would probably be balling out in some capacity too if I had Gilbert Arenas money, but let’s look at some more things he chose to spend his bread on.
On top of the ridiculous shark situation, my man spent about $100,000 on landscaping, $5,000 a month for housekeepers, and $675 to wash his cars, per car – he had a lot of cars. In addition, he spent $1,000,000 on his backyard pool.
Remember I mentioned the child support? One thing I can truly admire about Agent 0 is the love he has for his children. He balled out on a $60,000 train set for his kids, as well as an $8,000 toy Mercedes Benz.
The crazy part is in 2008 Arenas signed a six-year, $111 million contract with the Wizards, playing only 55 games with Washington after signing the deal. It’s still considered one of the worst NBA contracts in history to this day – but turned out great for him.
It’s undeniable that Agent 0 is among the great scorers the league has ever seen – and while his spending habits were at times questionable, he has proved to be able to stay afloat throughout his post-career life.
