Luis Garcia of the Washington Nationals becomes the first player born in the 21st century to hit a home run

Luis Garcia may sound like a very common name, but it’s a name that will forever be etched in MLB history. In the 2nd inning of the Nationals’ game against the division rival Atlanta Braves, Luis Garcia launched a two-run home run to right field for his first career major league home run. It was an exciting accomplishment for the young rookie, but it was also a historic home run. Garcia became the first player born in the 21st century to hit a home run. 

Garcia was born on May 16, 2000, and made his MLB debut on August 14th against the Baltimore Orioles after Nationals’ second baseman Starlin Castro was placed on the IL with a broken wrist. Garcia is currently the youngest player in the MLB with the second-youngest being Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels (who is the youngest of the 21-year-olds). Entering the 2020 season, Garcia was ranked as the Nationals’ #2 prospect and the 91st overall in MLB (all according to MLB.com).
