What is “Last Chance U?'”
“Last Chance U” is a Netflix docuseries that follows a junior college football team or better known as JUCO throughout its season. The term last chance stands for players last chance to get back to the top. Many players in this series were kicked out of school for off the field issues or grades in school.
Season 2 linebacker Dakota Allen was charged with home burglary and theft and was kicked out of school at Texas Tech. He then transfers to East Mississippi, starring in season 2. Allen had an amazing season and returned to Texas Tech. He proceeds to have two very successful seasons back in D1 and gets drafted by the Rams with the 251st pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Allen is one prime example of someone who had one last chance to get back to the top. Many players like Allen were featured in the series. Though it can be sad hearing these stories, many players have succeeded after the show documents them. Some player’s and coach’s that had a spotlight in the show were:
John Franklin III –

John Franklin III starred as one of the quarterbacks in season 1 at East Mississippi Community College. Although Franklin III wasn’t the starting quarterback Netflix still followed his season due to a previous year at Florida State. Despite not starting, Franklin III scored six touchdowns and added another passing touchdown on October 22nd, 2015, in front of an Auburn scout. He then transferred to Auburn and didn’t play much in two seasons. Due to limited playing time at Auburn, Franklin III grad-transferred to Florida Atlantic. He now is one of just a few Last Chance U stars to make the NFL.
DeAndre Johnson –

Johnson is the second former Florida State quarterback to star on the docuseries. Johnson, season 2, was kicked out of Florida State for getting violent with a women at a bar (via. sportingnews.com). Johnson had a great season at East Mississippi Community College and then transferred to Florida Atlantic. Johnson dealt with a blood clot issue that limited his playing time at Florida Atlantic. He then transferred to Texas Southern and played one final season of college ball. Johnson is currently a NFL Free-Agent (via. sportscasting.com).
Bobby Bruce –
When season 3 debuted at Independence Community College, the linebacker and safety became a vocal point of the show. Bruce was arrested before season 3 came around, but he still received one last chance. Bruce did carry some emotional problems on and off the field showing it during games and interviews, catching the eyes and hearts of viewers. Sadly, Bruce was kicked out of school because of security footage showing him and a few teammates going into a dorm that wasn’t their’s and leaving with a bag. Bruce is now playing arena ball for the Manatee Neptunes.
Jason Brown –
Jason Brown was the head coach for Independence Community College during seasons 3 and 4. He was a very loud and vocal coach putting down a player in order to win. He led Independence to a bowl game win, but his loud mouth and ego get in the way of his coaching. Brown proceeds to get fired for a derogatory text that he sends to a German player. He then resigns but more news comes out about him facing eight felony charges for blackmail and identity theft (via. bleacherreport.com). Jason Brown currently does not have a coaching job.
“Last Chance U” will play one final season this time at Laney College but will then transition to basketball for season 6.
