Former No.2 overall pick Ryan Leaf has been arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery in Palm Springs, CA. The former quarterback was booked for domestic violence and has his bail set at $5,000.
This arrest adds to the once-promising quarterback hefty run-ins with the law. As in 2009 Leaf was indicted on burglary and controlled substance charges in Texas. Just one year later he pleads guilty to seven counts of obtaining controlled substances by fraud and was sentenced to 10 years of probation. Leaf then would go on to get arrested a couple of more times and would spend two years in prison and was placed under the supervision of Great Falls Probation and Parole.
Leaf was a part of one of the biggest debates in NFL history as many NFL experts could not tell who was the better player, Leaf or Peyton Manning. For weeks people debated who would go first overall to the Colts. Despite that being said Leaf will always be remembered as a bust in the NFL world as he failed to live up to the hype that surrounded him. The San Diego Chargers fell for the Heisman-finalist and traded up in the 1998 Draft to select Leaf with the second overall pick.
In Leaf’s rookie season he would only start 9 games for the Chargers throwing for 1,289 yards on a 45.3% completion percentage, 2 touchdowns, and an awful 15 interceptions. Ryan would go on to miss his entire second year as he suffered a shoulder injury 20 minutes into the Chargers’ first training camp workout. In his third year in the league he started nine games throwing for 1,883 yards on a 50% completion percentage, 11 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions. After just three years the San Diego released Leaf and that was it for his career although he did have a stint with the Cowboys where he stared three games.
