Luka Doncic is tearing the league apart at the age of 21. After having an insane rookie season that included averages of 21 points, 6 assists and 8 rebounds, Doncic proved to be one of the most promising young players in the league. After boasting averages of 29 points, 9 assists and 9 rebounds on 46% shooting this season, he solidified himself as one of the best players currently in the world. In reality, this isn’t shocking in the slightest. Anyone who watched Doncic last season knew that he was mature beyond his years and that he is one of, if not the most, skilled player to touch the court today. As Doncic developed into the all-star we see, he has also helped the Dallas Mavericks develop back into a playoff team. This type of season from an NBA sophomore is not only very rare, but it’s insanely impressive. Analyzing how Doncic has done it is imperative to understanding just how players from foreign countries come into the NBA and dominate.

For one, Doncic has been playing pro basketball since he was 16 years old. From 2015-2018, Doncic played for Real Madrid in the Euroleague. He was a teenager going against grown men, and playing fairly well. In his last year with Real Madrid, Doncic led his team in both scoring and assists. Getting this type of experience before playing in the NBA certainly has helped Doncic evolve into the player we see today. This was most definitely one of the reasons Doncic was so high on many teams draft boards.

Not only does his previous experience help him, his build and skill set translate exceptionally well to NBA play. His 6’7, 218 lb build is near perfect for a small forward in today’s league. When he’s not playing a forward spot, he can take the ball up the court, usually giving him a clear height advantage over smaller guards. His skill set is what really makes him different from the rest. Doncic’s game seems to have no holes and if it does, they haven’t been exposed yet. He is a great shooter, an excellent slasher, a good defender, and an amazing playmaker. Couple this with one of the most unique players in the league in Kristaps Porzingis, it’s no coincidence that the Mavericks are playing high tier basketball.
