Carson Wentz gets Extended! Good or Bad?

Some good news for Philadelphia Eagles fans and the organization, on the date of June 6th, 2019, the Philadelphia Eagles and franchise Quarterback Carson Wentz have agreed on terms to extend Wentz to a 4 year, $128 million extension with over $107 million in guaranteed money, which will be the largest guaranteed contract in the National Football League. Carson Wentz will be signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for the next six years with his 2020 fifth-year option included. Although everyone is excited about this power move, we all saw it coming. Carson Wentz is in the final year of his current 4 year, $24.676 million rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $720k for the 2019 season. Since being extended there are a lot of people questioning this move, is it good or bad? There are many NFL executives around the league and reporters who think that Wentz is not deserving of this contract due to his injury history. Despite Wentz putting up amazing numbers in his first 3 years in the NFL, he has struggled with some awful injuries. In Carson Wentz’s rookie year, he threw for 3,782 yards to go along with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, a completion percentage of 62.4%, and a rating of 92.5, those are great numbers for a rookie Quarterback who at the time, did not have many weapons surrounding him on offense. In Wentz’s second year in the NFL, he threw for 3,296 yards to go along with 33 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, to go along with 60.2% completion percentage and a rating of 101.9. Let’s not forget to mention that this was Wentz’s breakout year and the year that Wentz tore his ACL in week 14 in a win against the Los Angeles Rams. Before getting injured in week 14, Carson Wentz led his team to an 11-2 record and was the leading candidate for winning MVP, he also set his team up to win Super Bowl 52. In 2018, Wentz returned to the field in week 3 against the Indianapolis Colts and went on to play up until week 15 when he was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a lingering back issue. In the 11 games that Carson Wentz played in the 2018 season, he threw for 3,074 yards, to go along with 21 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, and a completion percentage of 69.6%, and a rating of 102.2.

Although Carson Wentz has suffered many injuries in his short career, it is safe to say that Wentz has a ton of talent and potential. There are many doubters when it comes to Carson Wentz, but let’s not forget that there are many believers also. There are many other Quarterbacks in the NFL right now that are making the same amount, if not more money than Carson Wentz who are not having the amount of success. For instance, Kirk Cousins who is making $28 million a year, has not had anywhere near the amount of success that Wentz has had. Another player that is getting paid a ton of money with a total contract value of $125 million is Derek Carr, who has struggled recently. (Disclaimer: these examples are not to bash on any NFL players, it is to simply compare contracts). If you really look deep into the details and the moves of this signing, it is a smart decision, they are not many Quarterbacks like Carson Wentz that are in the NFL, and if there are, they are all locked up in multi-year contracts. With that being said, resigning Wentz was a great move by the Philadelphia Eagles and it is safe to say that they have their franchise Quarterback for years to come.
