CP3 lauds Murray: ‘He’s really going to be good now’ as Spurs’ top PG

Heading into his third season, San Antonio Spurs point guard Dejounte Murray already has the respect of a notable pundit: Houston Rockets floor general – and future Hall of Famer – Chris Paul.

Paul recently recounted playing alongside a then-teenage Murray in a pickup game several years ago.

“When Jamal Crawford got married a few years ago, Dejounte might have still been in high school,” Paul said, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Feigen. “The night before Jamal’s wedding we played a pickup game in Seattle. Dejounte was on my team.”

Paul came away impressed with the up-and-coming guard.

“Really good, really good,” Paul said of Murray. “So athletic. Plays with a lot of confidence. Now, too, playing in San Antonio, (Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich) gave him the keys to the ship. He’s really going to be good now.”

As arguably the best defensive point guard in NBA history, Paul is uniquely qualified to scout a player built in the mold of Murray.

The Washington product garnered his first All-Defensive Second Team honors in 2017-18, punching well above his weight while averaging 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game despite seeing just 21.5 minutes of floor time per night.
